Unlike the math instruction many of us recall, a problem solving based inquiry is a synthesis of meaningful problems (drawn from real contexts), teacher-led mini-lessons (based upon the struggles students are encountering), and games and puzzles (to support student curiosity and make connections to real life). This session will highlight several engaging and innovative trends that will change the landscape of teaching and learning in mathematics, while addressing both curricular and core competencies. This model provides students with the necessary skills to read a problem, choose from a variety of appropriate strategies, apply a strategy to solve the problem, and then reflect on the efficiency and accuracy of the strategy to explain the answer. Together, we will change the way our students think, reason and prove in mathematics . More importantly, we will enhance their positive feelings and confidence with mathematics. In this session, teachers will have an opportunity to further their mathematical teaching pedagogy and begin planning for the year ahead in their respective unique teaching environments.

Target Audience: Grades 1-8
